The Southern Ocean
Mural on public bath house, Selinsgrove, PA
May 2021
On June 10, 2020, the Selinsgrove Pool bath house received its Seven Seas mural, thanks to local artists and the Selinsgrove Area High School National Art Honor Society, in cooperation with SelinsgroveSTART.
pen was one of seven local artists that came together to give the bath house a one-of-a-kind makeover. Using the concept of the Seven Seas, Chris Kalcich (Arctic Ocean), Ciera Zacek (Northern Atlantic Ocean), Edward “Ted” Hendricks (South Atlantic Ocean), Isabel Proger (North Pacific Ocean), Brian Caron (South Pacific Ocean), Cristi Beeler (Indian Ocean), and pen bxtr (Southern Ocean/Antarctic Ocean) each created a mural depicting a selection of aquatic life found in each body of water.
The artists that were involved in this project represented a diverse group from the community. The team included current college students, recently-graduated high school students, a former Selinsgrove resident with strong ties to the community, a high-school art instructor/college instructor with her students, and a father/daughter team. In addition, three of our artists proudly represent the autism, LGBTQ+, and mental health awareness communities.
The mural was a gift to the Selinsgrove Pool and created as an effort to draw attention to the pool in hopes to increase fundraising for its needed repairs and updates.

pen was asked by the local high school to paint a mural in the art wing. Eiffel is based off of a painting that pen gifted to one of the teachers at the school after she shared her photographs of her recent trip to Paris.

BLM
created for a Black Lives Matter event
June 2020
pen believes that this might be one of his most important pieces. He created the sign for a BLM event in Selinsgrove, PA in June 2020, shortly after George Floyd's murder. At the event, an anonymous donor gave Pen $500 to make as many t-shirts as possible and pass them out at the local high school on the first day of school. By the first day of classes, 37 students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members were wearing the shirt.
pen later learned that an individual took a photo of a teacher wearing the shirt and posted it to their social media account. Several hours later, pen received a Facebook message from one of that person's friends who saw it and asked if their school could use his design for t-shirts for their football team. This individual explained that racism and discrimination were happening amongst the players, so she wanted t-shirts made for all of the players to wear on Fridays before their games. Pen immediately gave his permission for them to use his design.
He learned, months later, that at least two other high school football teams in the area did the same.

We are the Future (of Non-Violence)
Created for the Rape and Domestic Abuse Prevention Program
June 2022
The Rape and Domestic Abuse Prevention program had a contest for young artists to submit shirt designs for their fundraiser. pen's design was chosen, and the prize was a VISA gift card, which he received. The design was eventually added to the t-shirts that were being sold. (Note: pen donated the gift card back to the organization.)
Fun Fact: A big fan of the musical group Air Supply, pen incorporated Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock singing to each other through megaphones at the top of the heart. (If you look carefully, you can just make out Graham holding his guitar.) |
